What is the Golden Visa?

Portugal's Golden Visa is a residency-by-investment program that grants residency to non-EU investors. Originally launched in 2012, it has been one of the most popular paths for Chinese buyers seeking EU access.

After 5 years of holding the visa, investors can apply for permanent residency or Portuguese citizenship — granting full EU mobility, work, and education rights.

Investment thresholds

  • €500,000 — Investment fund / venture capital units (current preferred route)
  • €500,000 — Job creation / scientific research
  • €250,000 — Donation to artistic / cultural heritage

Family benefits

The visa covers the main applicant plus spouse, dependent children (any age if studying), and dependent parents. The whole family receives the same residency rights and Schengen-area access.

Stay requirement

Just 7 days per year on average over 5 years (14 days for the first 2-year period, then 14 days for each 2-year period after). One of the lowest physical presence requirements in any EU residency program.

Path to citizenship

After 5 years, investors can apply for Portuguese citizenship. Requirements:

  • Basic Portuguese language (A2 level) test
  • No criminal record in Portugal or country of origin
  • Proof of community ties
